Burlap Stockings…Bless their heart!

Reading Karianne’s post this morning reminded me of something I wanted to share with you.

You see, I have been admiring, pinning, and generally loving up on burlap Christmas stockings for the last couple of years. How could I possibly resist? They are a bit natural, a bit bling, a bit classic, a bit gorgeous…ok awholelotta gorgeous!

Like these that Cindy at Cottage Instincts made.
(one look at the header on her blog and I know we are destined to be friends forever! Any friend of aqua and red is a friend of mine!)
Or these beauties from Bella Inspirations
Burlap and starfish? yes please!
And look at the details of the cutie pies from Make it and Love it!
About a month ago, I decided it was time to stop admiring from a distance and actually make a few (six regular size and one small one for Boomer) burlap stockings of my own.
After a brief discussion with the nice lady working in the fabric section of Hobby Lobby about when they would get more non-ugly non-orangeish burlap in, a sweet older woman shopping for felt asked me what on earth I was going to do with burlap. I proceeded to gush about the beautiful burlap stockings that I’ve been dreaming about. After a moment of quiet, she said “honey, you know burlap stinks, right?
I told her that I don’t mind at all! The memorizing loveliness of these stockings would overpower any scent given off by the fabric. She just nodded and pressed on with her day.
A half an hour later, over on the other side of the store (I needed cute wooden letters for my stockings) from behind me I heard, in that stage whisper that old ladies do,
“that young woman over there is going to make stockings out of burlap! Bless her heart!
Oh well, at least she called me a young woman!

Thirty Days of Gratitude: Day One

Join me as I follow the lead of sweet Karen of Dogs Don’t Eat Pizza (love that name!) and show my gratitude for the many blessings in my life by posting each day in November what I am grateful for that day. I may post here on the blog, some days it may just be on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

I know that I have many more than thirty things to be thankful for so there may be some seriously emotional posts, some downright silly, but all genuine!

that I still have little people young enough to trick or treat.

I love their excitement, their creativity displayed in their costumes, the way they forget their usual shyness.

Snorkeler being attacked by a piranha

With two of my four children being too old for this kind of fun, I am well aware of how quickly the time will come when there are no little people living here, no little people to drag me around the neighborhood begging candy off the neighbors. When that time comes, we’ll adjust, I am sure. But for now, I am going to treasure these moments that I am so grateful for.

Burlap Rose Tutorial

Wanna know how to make burlap roses? You know you do!
You can use these roses for bouquets, centerpieces and flower arrangements, wreaths, just about anything! Use different fabrics for a completely different look!
Before you watch the video, there are a few things you should know.
1. I don’t sound like a man in real life.
2. James hasn’t been that quiet for 7 minutes ever.
3. It’s our first tutorial video, the lighting stinks, I repeat myself several times, and it’s pretty long.
That being said…. here’s how you make burlap (and dropcloth, organza, corduroy and every other fabric I could get my hands on) roses :)

Sea Glass Inspired Bathroom

This post has been a long time coming. We finished our bathroom remodel in June, just in time for all of our company that came for Mike’s graduation.
I will warn you now, this post has TONS of pics, I may have gotten carried away!
You probably know that we live near the beach and our home has an unmistakable beachy cottage feel to it. We love how comfortable and cozy it is and we wanted this bathroom to have that same relaxed feeling as our master bathroom.

When we bought this house seven years ago it didn’t have a cottage feel to it. It had a built-twenty-years-ago-and-completely-neglected-since feel to it.

Here are a couple pics of this room I took at final walk through.

Yikes, right?

and what it looks like now :)

Much better and much more us!
We were on a tight budget for this room, especially considering all that needed to be done.
Like the floors and the tongue and groove planked walls (our big splurge!)
and the entire laundry area

We did save a lot by using our old farmhouse kitchen table for the vanity. James cut almost half of it off to make it fit width wise but it was the perfect length. We sanded the entire thing (several times because we couldn’t get the stain color quite right!), painted the legs and added the sink and cute knobs to the front.

I really love the shelf that goes around the room for all my old medicine bottles. They were scattered around the house, now they are all together.

I el-oh-vee-ee this room. I will admit to you now that I sometimes go in there and just look around :)

MUT Shop

Remember, how my sweet hubby surprised me with a beach house for my birthday weekend? We had such a fun and relaxing time! Even though we were only 15 minutes from home, we were far, far away from all the demands of home. Don’t get me wrong, I love our home and even love the must do’s of being home.
But, it was nice to have no worries for a few days. I really did little else than sit in the beach and play with the kids all weekend. Now that, is a perfect birthday weekend, if you ask me!
My friend, Mary, and her kids stopped by the beach house with a little gift for me, a bottle of wine and this adorable glass! Isn’t it so cute?

Mary is having a sale in her ETSY shop this weekend!
